From: "John D Hyatt" <HYATTS4@brigadoon.com> the photo of the Hyatt Coat of Arms as we have them. This version is supplied by Margery Hyett of Cheltenham, England, who has been researching the family for years. These arms were issued to James Hyett, Constable of St. Briavel's Castle and Warden of the Royal Forest of Dean, and his descendants. James and his son Roger held the office of Constable and Warden from 1471 - 1483. James was issued these arms for leading a party of miners to undermine the walls of a French castle. This was in the reign of Edward IV. James also was a participant in the battle at Nibley. He was allied to the house of Berkeley. They were defending Berkeley Castle which was being attacked by the Earl of Lisle and his retainers. The Earl of Lisle was the heir of the Earl of Warwick (known as the "Kingmaker"). The Earl of Lisle was killed in the engagement, struck in the throat with an arrow or crossbow bolt. James was accused of being the one who dealt the Earl his deathblow, but this was not proven. The battle at Nibleywas the last battle between English nobility on English soil. I am including a hand colored version of a 16th cent. engraving of the castle of St. Briavel's. The castle still stands and is preserved by the English Heritage Foundation. It is now used as a youth hostel. (You can sleep there if you like.)
