Williamson Sewal and Criddlebaugh came from North Carolina in 1845 by oxen drawn wagontrain. They then proceeded to cross the Mississippi River at the shallowest point near Davenport, Iowa. Many of the pioneers who had traveled this far settled at Hillsborough, (near Salem) Henry County, Iowa some fifty miles west of Burlington, Iowa.Several of the men felt that this land was to flat after being accustom to the rolling landscape of the North Carolina. They continued traveling west to what is now Appanoose County near Centerville and Moravia where they found similar land. The area they settled was called Hiattsville. They then returned to their families at Hillsboro, N.C. after being gone for over a year. (To look after some estate he had left) The families then moved to Appanoose County, Iowa in 1849. They cleared the twelve foot grasses to make thier homes. These grasses were full of wild turkeys and other wildlife. (Story says the Morman trail ran past the farm on the east side of the Denny Cemetery.)Williamson Sewal Hiatt settled his family near Hiattsville. Sewal and the boys cut down the trees, hewed the logs, made wooden pins and built a log cabin. Later the boys and Sewal manufactured bricks and built a house that was still standing in 1980. Later, Williamson Sewal built the Hiattsville Store near Soap Creek.spouse: >Hayworth, Sarah Mahala (1809 - )Sewal and family returned for a time to North Carolina in 1848 to April 1849. They then returned to their Iowa home in Iowa with fellow North Carolinians.Williamson Sewal Hiatt died in Appanoose County, Iowa on January 28,1899. Both Sewal and Sarah were buried in the Denny Cemetary, east of Hiattsville and south of Moravia. Stone reads: The vacant place, the empty chair, we see them day by day and oh, it fills our hearts, with care since our loved one went away.-- -- Marie Chamber Ballew (stories she was told as a child)
