From: "John D Hyatt" <HYATTS4@@brigadoon.com> (I have made minor corrections in spelling and grammar, and have inserted paragraph breaks for easier reading, otherwise the letters are presented as written. Thomas and John were not able to join with their Newton Co. cousins. Tom and John enlisted in the 35th Ga. Vol. Inf. and fought in Virginia under Lee. Ples and his brothers enlisted in the 34th Ga. Vol. Inf. and fought in the Army of Tennessee under Braxton Bragg and Joe E. Johnston. Tom was fatally wounded at Mechanicsville during the Seven Days campaign and John was killed not long after. The flag of the 35th Ga. can be seen in the museum at the Capitol in Atlanta. I am in the process - temporarily stalled - of writing a book titled "This Cruel War" about the life of Pleasant Woodard based on his letters plus historical background. I have four chapters completed. ) -- Letter of Thomas J. Hyatt (b 1846), ggggg grandson of Charles Hyatt (b 1600), also son of Pleasant Hyatt (b aft 1810) (brother of Elisha) in Newton Co. to Pleasant Woodard Hyatt in Heard Co. Georgia, Newton County , August 9th, 1861 , Dear Cousin, I seat myself this evening to write you a few lines to let you know that I am yet alive, and the rest of the people here. Ples, I haven't anything to write that is good, for there is no news here, only rain. We have plenty of that. It is not worthwhile for me to spend a great deal of time in writing about crops. I will just simply say that they are as good as crops ever get to be. I have been in the habit of writing something sort of funny when I write to you, but Ples, I haven't it this time, for I have joined a company to go to the war and that has vanished all my fun. Ples, this is a solemn time with me, though I am in hopes that this is the worst. Our company is not made up yet. We have only 50 men. I am not certain that it will be made up, but I think that it will for we have as good a captain as there is in the county. You know him very well, his name is James White, Colonel. Ples, I would like to go with you the best in the world, and I would like to go with Jim and Bill. ...If you will get Jim and Bill in the notion by the first of December we will all go together and gain the victory or die. If you get in this notion by that time - no, not by that time, but now, I would like for you to let me know soon and I will withdraw from my company and will go with you, or if you are willing to go in this company, come and we will go with it. Do not think that I am a-urging the necessity to hard on you, for I mean nothing of that sort. I just want to go with you. I received your letter and after I had read it I was glad to know that you are yet my friend, for I have always regarded you as my best friend, though I have been informed different, Ples, you said that somebody has been a-telling damn lies about (you and me), if so alright with us. Ples, I will close my letter by saying that you must answer my letter as soon as you can, for I may have to leave in a month from this time. So nothing more, only remember your best friend. Thomas J. Hyatt(Postscript) Our last company of volunteers left the other day. Five negroes climbed up on a well to see them and fell in. Two are dead and one more nearly. ---- The following letter is written on the back of Thomas's letter. Georgia, Newton County Dear Cousin, I take my pen in hand to let you know that I ain't forgot you yet. Ples I am well and as bad as ever. I am going to the war and I want you to go with me. I received your letter and was glad to hear from you. I would like to see you all before I leave for the war. Ples, if I never see you no more, remember your best friend. So nothing more. John P. The COPELANDS were from VA and went on to Orange Co, IN after spending some time in KY. There is some debate going on in COPELAND circles whether this Sarah COPELAND is the same as Sally COPELAND, both daughters of Jacob COPELAND and Annie HENTON. Sally being a usual nickname for Sarah. I would appreciate any info you may have on this line in order to resolve this question. Thanks, Jane DRAKE BRODYspouse: >Copeland, Sarah (1797 - 1873)
