Researching a Hyett/Hyatt/Hiatt family from the villages of Crowcombe and Stogumber in Somerset, England - Ernest Richard Hyett born 1880 Stogumber, went to Manitoba, Canada before World War I, and lost contact with the rest of the family. Firstly, Ernest Richard ("Dick") Hyett born 1880 who went to Manitoba, Canada, was the son of Walter Hyett born 1845 and Elizabeth Ann Baker (c1855-1928). Ernest was the sixth of seven sons. Five of the other sons have descendants, all in the UK as far as I know. Jillian Trethewey <jmt@@malvern.starway.net.au>

It appears that John Hiett probably came to America with William Penn on his second trip to America. Penn's second voyage to PA was in the fall of 1699, and our John Hiett seems to have arrived at about the same time, for it was early that following year that he purchased three hundred acres of land in Bucks County, PA for three hundred and fifty pounds "current silver money." This can be found in Deed Book 3 p 27, Doylestown, the county seat of Bucks County PA 11d 4m 1700. No record is found of John Hiett in Quaker records of PA but Fall MM in Bucks County PA makes one brief reference to a "Mary Hyot" who was "received on certificate" the 7th of 6m 1706". Of John and Mary little is known. He is called "yeoman" A yeoman is a free born common man of the most respectable class, a freeholder. He was probably a farmer, and possibly a merchant. He may have also lived in Marylandspouse: >Blick, Elizabeth (*1660 - )
may have been buried at Crowcombe in 1814 aged 17.
The first reference to Hyetts in Stogumber is in 1664, just after the English Civil War, when a lot of people moved around.spouse: >Baker, Elizabetrh Ann (1855 - 1928)By 1800 there were two separate branches of the Hyett family living in Crowcombe, which is only a mile or so from Stogumber: The family of John Hyett/Hyatt bapt 1753 Crowcombe bur 1814 in the poor house at Crowcombe. John married Elizabeth Hancock in 1780 at Crowcombe and had at least seven and possibly ten children. However, one hundred years later, none of this large family appears in the 1881 census for Somerset. So where did they go? The ten children were: Stephen c1780 (possible son of John) who had a son George b 1809 John d young 1782 (possible son of John) Abraham 1781-1845 m Mary Corner Isaac 1783-1842 Faithfull c1786-1849 (possible son of John) m Sarah Cavil Agnes 1788 Richard 1791 Elizabeth 1793 Charlotte 1796 John 1799- may have been buried at Crowcombe in 1814 aged 17. The other main branch of the family are the descendants of James Hyett 1796-1868, Master shoemaker of Crowcombe. This family remained in Crowcombe and Stogumber until 1981, though many also moved away of course. James married Mary Davis of Nettlecombe in 1818 at Crowcombe and had five children: Elizabeth b 1819 (Mrs Whitefield) Richard b 1820 Crowcombe m Jane Woodrow and had one son Walter b 1845 Anne b 1823 and witness at Richard's wedding in 1845 James 1825-1889 went to Australia (this is my family) Catherine 1828 m Francis Hooper Jillian Trethewey <jmt@@malvern.starway.net.au>
