Book of Knowledge Vol. V Page 1320spouse: >Everyone who goes to Scarborough is aware, there are really two towns, the old town with steep streets and stairways, its old red tiled house where children live as their ancestores lived hundreds of years ago. Then there is the newer and fashinable Scarborough where the roads and great house make the "English Naples"as it is called - the Handsomest sea side town in the north of England. All Scarborough is now compared with the Scarborough whose name is not forgotten. The Romans built it, but the hardy horsemen called it Scarborough. Thier word for it was -"Scardeburgh"- which means a fortress on a rock held by Harold Hardrada and Tosig. They attacked the town in1066 and because they could not capture it by other maens, they set it a fire. They burned all they could and robbeded and murdered then left. Scarborough was so ruined that when William the Conqueror had his Domesday Book written, the town was not even mentioned in it. Later a great castle was built and many battles were fought in or near the town. During these dark days, Georgre Fox, the famous Quaker was imprisoned in the castle. He was shamefully ill treated. One loaf of bread had to last hin several weeks. There was no fire in the cell and the roof was so leaky he was compelled to bale out the rain. When the king learned that the good Quaker was not a rebel, he released him, but not before Fox had borne great suffering. John Sr. lived in London and attended the Peels Friends Church, Quaker). John lived his life as a blacksmith. In 1682 both John Sr. and John Jr. came to the United States where they visited Buck County, Pennsylvania. Later in 1684, John Sr. went back to London while John Jr. stayed behind.
Like that of his father and grandfather attended Peel Quaker Church while in England. John Jr. went to the United States with his father in 1682. However when John Sr. returned to England in 1684, John Jr. did not.spouse: >Farr, Mary (*1666 - )
