As a young man James Ellsworth worked as a blacksmith and was an early Postmaster of Moravia, Iowa. James Ellsworth became a traveling hardware salesman with the A. Weber Hardware Company out of Keokuk, Iowa. Later, he and his wife Minnie opened their own hardware store in Moravia, Iowa.
