--From Gma STEGALL (His wife) ... He was named when Papa + Mama (His Parents) were reading Longfellow's poem "Evangaline". There was a Basil in the poem. --From Gma STEGALL .... Basil (see Emily's, His Sister's notes for more info) breast fed and did poorly. Finally at 2 years of age Basil fainted as Mama bathed him. They took him to a doctor in New Madison. The doctor said "Let him eat anything he wants because he is going to die". They stopped at the grocery and Basil wanted a banana. He ate it. They stopped at Aunt Clara's and she was frying sausage. He wanted the sausage and ate it. From then on he ate what he wanted to, not what a child usually was fed. --From Gma STEGALL .... Now when Basil had Yellow Jaundice and Hepititus and went down to 126 pounds in 1957, I was afraid i was going to lose him and I asked him if he would eat anything I'd bring him to the hospital -- he said, maybe sausage. I asked Dr. Hillman, he said try it and Basil started gaining weight. In one week 5#. From: "Michael J. Godshalk" <godshalk@@suntan.eng.usf.edu>--From Gma STEGALL (His wife) ...
